And (remember) when Musa (Moses) said to his people: "Verily, Allah commands you that you slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you make fun of us?" He said, "I take Allah's Refuge from being among Al-Jahilun (the ignorant or the foolish)." Allah made it a point here in these verses to mention what the people’s reactions were to Allah’s instructions Musa (AS) on behalf of Allah tells the people to slaughter a cow, now whether that makes logical sense or not, it is Allah’s command and it is validated because it is coming from the messenger of Allah This is mentioned as this is a timeless problem because even to this day you are going to have people who are going to hear of an instruction, that is clearly from Allah and his messenger (Peace Be Upon Him) and people will ridicule it. This reaction would make Musa As upset so in the same ayah it says: قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ "I take Allah's Refuge from being among Al-Jahilun (the ignorant or the foolish)." Jahil (جاهل)is actually the opposite of Aqil (عاقل) Aqil (عاقل) is someone who controls their emotions Jahil (جاهل) is someone who doesn't control their emotions This ayah isn’t just a reminder to those who make a mockery out of Allah’s commandments, it is also a warning to those who deliver Allah's message, who try to do the works of the prophets (peace be upon them all) and when its mocked and ridiculed they shouldn't lose their cool. Because Musa AS immediately says "I seek refuge with Allah that i should be from those who are Jahil (جاهل)" i.e. those who lose their temper In other words this would really enrage him if he was to lose his cool and he does not want to lose his temper because then he will not be able to do his job May Allah make us amongst those who never make fun of Allah’s commandments, and when hearing inappropriate things in response to when we are advising each other we are able to control our emotions. Aameen. Notes from Nouman Ali Khan's lecture.
